During January 2011 – FREE Funnix Reading Program – Yes, FREE!!!
Great if you are currently using Headsprout.
Yes, I realize it has been quite a while since I posted. In my defense, we had both computer and camera issues.
An update on what we’re doing: We’re still using most of the same curricula. He finished his Singapore Math book, and we loved it. We’re still working through the Singapore Science. I’m not as in love with the science. It feels a bit too light. It just glosses over stuff, and I find myself having to supplement a lot. We’ve also stopped using the History curriculum.
I’ve decided to use Geography as a spine and build out from there. We’re using Expedition Earth as an outline. We’ve started in Asia and will be working our way West until we end at home.
We’ve covered China so far and now have moved onto South Korea. Our Language Arts are covered by reading some stories about S Korea or from S Korea. I LOVE the book Around the World in 80 Tales. We’re also reading some chapter books including The Lighthouse Family, and The Jesus Storybook Bible. The Magic Schoolbus books and TV show help to fill out Science. This also covers our Bible component.

Overall, we’ve settled into Homeschooling very nicely. We’ve incorporated it into our daily lives. Writing practice comes from writing letters to people. Art comes from drawing pictures and making cards. Math and science come from baking and cooking. Reading comes from us reading to him. Plus there are always the field trips, co-ops, classes, Zoo Club, etc. It’s been a great experience so far!
Here are some random photos from the last few months. There are a few taken by the little monkey, and some taken by me. They show History lessons at various museums in DC, baking and learning Chemistry and math, and a bunch of other fun outings.
And I promise not to neglect you for so long next time. Unless there is a new episode of Glee on. Then you’re on your own!

I have so much to update, but for now, I just wanted to chat about this new online game we’ve been playing called Jumpstart. Here is a description:
“JumpStart is an award-winning adventure-based 3D virtual world that is super-personalized, wildly imaginative and really fun, but don’t let that fool you – it also teaches math, reading, and critical thinking skills so kids get a real jump start in life.”
So far little man is loving it. It is so much fun and he just feels like he is playing a game, yet the learning is happening spontaneously.
If you get a moment, check it out. I’ll be posting more about it later, but wanted to let you all know about this super fun learning game.
One of my favorite things about Homeschooling is that your life is so much more flexible. Kids not feeling well one day? No problem! We can make it up some other time. Want to learn about giraffes? Great! Let’s head to the zoo and learn about them and see them in real life. The zoo is not as crowded during the week since everyone else is in school. Husband has two days off in a row? Great!!! Let’s head to DC for a getaway!
So we did. We left last Wednesday night and came back home on Friday. We packed as much as possible into those 2 little days as we could. We went to the Spy Museum (soooo cool, although I kept looking around at everyone after wondering if there were any spies in our midst), and the Air and Space Museum on Thursday. Air and Space Museum was a BIG hit. He loved all the airplanes and rockets and learning about the planets (one of his new passions). He also got a great picture with an astronaut. So much fun.
The following day, we headed back out to visit the Natural History Museum. We’ve visited many museums in DC, but never this one. We will most definitely be returning! What a cool museum. I wish we had been able to see everything, but the little guy started melting down after a couple of hours, so we had to leave and get some lunch.
Thanks to the wonderful iPhone and a great little app called Urban Spoon, we managed to find some awesome eateries unique to DC. On Thursday, we lunched at this great African/Portuguese restaurant in Chinatown called Nando’s Peri-Peri. So yummy and delicious. Nice to find a bit of our cultural roots in the middle of D.C. too.
Again, thanks to Urban Spoon, we found this great Latin fusion restaurant in Dupont Circle where we had lunch on Friday. The food at Panas was amazing. No offense to my grandmother, but those were hands down, the best empanadas I have ever tasted. For desert, we headed over to Sweet Green for some yummy frozen yogurt.
After lunch, we headed home (and got stuck in traffic for 2 hours). Despite not having done any formal schooling, we still managed to cover History, Science, Geography, and Math.
That makes one more thing I love about homeschooling-it can happen anywhere, anytime.
One final note: My son’s favorite thing about DC? The Metro. Of course.
